London). Die IPPF geht auf die neomalthusianische
Bewegung im 19.
Jahrhundert und vor dem Ersten
Weltkrieg sowie auf die Bewegung »Birth-Control« nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg (
Großbritannien) zurück, auf deren Tagung in Bombay 1952 die IPPF als internationale Organisation gegründet wurde. Ihr gehören die nichtstaatlichen nationalen Organisationen für Familienplanung an (aus Deutschland: »Pro Familia«).
Ziele der IPFF sind die
Förderung des Grundrechts aller Frauen, Männer und jungen Menschen auf freie und informierte
Entscheidung im Hinblick auf ihre sexuelle und reproduktive
Gesundheit, aktiver
Einsatz für die Möglichkeit der Inanspruchnahme dieses Rechts und die
Bereitstellung von entsprechenden Informationen und Dienstleistungsangeboten sowie die Sicherstellung, dass besonders die entsprechenden Rechte der Frau in der nationalen und internationalen
Entwicklungspolitik einen hohen Stellenwert einnehmen. Zunehmende
Bedeutung gewinnt die Arbeit der IPPF in den Entwicklungsländern. Die IPPF
unterstützt und berät dort zahlreiche Programme für Familienplanung und die Gesundheit von Müttern und Kindern. Die IPPF hat konsultativen Status in den einschlägigen internationalen Gremien.
